This article is more than ten years old and was last updated in March 2018.

After being a loyal and obsessive Lost viewer for the last six years, I thought now it's all over I would summarise the whole thing as I have interpreted it.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers.

About 2000 years ago pregnant woman is washed up on the shore of the island, she gives birth to two twins before being killed by a woman who raises the children as her own. One of the boys is called Jacob, the other doesn't have a name. The mother shows the boys a magical cave which is the heart of the island which they must protected even thought they are alone on the island, she also tells them that they can never hurt or kill each other.

When the boys are grown up they find out that they aren't alone on the island when their dead mother leads them to a camp populated by other survivors from her beached ship. The boys then fall out after finding out their foster mother has been lying to them, they have a fight and the nameless chap goes to live at the camp.

One day they bump in to each other again and the nameless one tell Jacob he's found away to leave the island by digging a well down in to a pocket of the glowing stuff in the cave. Jacob tells his Mum who stops him and kills the whole camp.

So the nameless one the kills his Mum with a dagger, Jacob smacks him one and drags him to the secret magical cave and chucks him in, he then re-emerges as a column of living black smoke, a monster but can change back in to a man who will live forever and be known as The Man in Black.

Jacob will also live forever and believes that his brother is evil and should never leave the island, if he does them the whole of existence will cease.

In 1867 a man named Ricardo Alpert was loaded on to slave ship called the Black Rock which was shipwrecked on the island. Ricardo bumped in to Jacob and his smoky-monster brother. Jacob gave Ricardo eternal youth, in exchange he would work for Jacob.

In the 1960s a man found the location of the island using a secret room beneath a church in LA called the Lamp Post. Later this information some how got in to the hands of an organisation founded by a man called Alvar Hanso, the DHARAMA Initiative. DHARAMA set up a series of experiments on the island which took advantage of the islands "unique" properties which seem to mainly focus around electro-magnetism.

DHARMA initially had a bit of trouble with some of the island's natives but it all turned out fine until a man named Ben Linus who was brought to the island by DHARMA as a child formed an alliance with the natives and killed all of the DHARMA people. Ben moved the natives in to the DHARMA houses.

About 15 years later a French research vessel was shipwrecked on the island, most of the crew died during the accident or shortly after arriving on the island but a pregnant woman name Rousseau survived and gave birth to a baby girl named Alex, she was taken as a baby by Ben who raised her as his own daughter.

12 years later a Scottish man named Desmond was shipwrecked on the island while sailing around the world. He was picked up and taken to one of DHARAMA's old underground stations called The Swan. Desmond was convinced to press a button every 108 minutes in order to save the world but one day, about four years down the line, he didn't...

Desmond's failure to press the button resulted in a huge electro-magnetic event which caused Oceanic flight 815 to crash on the island, luckily Desmond managed to press the button before anything worse happened.

There were several survivors from 815 crash, these were Jacob's candidates, he was hoping that one of them would eventually replace him as the protector of the magical cave and had visited them all at some point in their lives and given them a push in certain course in life which would ultimately result in them all being on the same plane.

Ben saw the the plane crash and sent some of his people to infiltrate the survivors. Some of them were taken and moved in to Ben's village. One of Ben's men, Ethan, seemed particularly interested in one of the survivors who was pregnant. It turns out that women had trouble giving birth on the island so Ethan took Claire to a hidden medical facility where they did tests on her, they planned to abort the baby and take it but Alex rescued her and Claire gave birth with the other survivors.

Ben's people soon started to interact with the survivors, but to do so they dressed in rags and fake beards to make themselves look like jungle-folk, the survivors gave them the name "the others".

The survivors kept themselves busy, some started to build raft to get off the island while a man named Locke found The Swan and was trying to get in to it through a hatch in the ground.

One day Rousseau ran in to the camp, she pointed out some black smoke and told them the others were coming, the survivors launched their raft, Locke blasted the hatch open with some explosives he found thinking they might be able to hide in there and a chap named Sayid went to the source of the black smoke.

It turned out that they hatch didn't have easy access so that was no good, the smoke was just a fire started by Rousseau as a diversion so that she could swoop in to steal Claire's baby to replace Alex, that plan failed as did the raft plan.

The Others were coming but they were coming for a young boy named Walt who was on the raft with his Dad, Michael. The Others sailed off with Walt after grabbing him and sinking the raft.

Locke, along with fellow survivors Kate and Jack managed to get down in to The Swan where they met Desmond, he told them about the button pressing and the survivors signed up and all took it in turns to press the button for a while until Locke decided it was all a lie and didn't press the button. This resulted in a huge electro-magnetic event. Desmond saved everyone by turning a key and amazingly wasn't killed but The Swan was destroyed.

At around the same time Jack, Kate and fellow survivors Sawyer and Hurley went off to what they thought was The Others' camp with Michael to rescue his son. Unfortunately Michael had set them up and it was a trap, in exchange Michael and Walt were given a boat so they could leave the island. Ben captured Kate, Jack and Sawyer and sent Hurley back to the 815 survivors.

Ben took his prisoners to another island, just off the coast of the main island. He kept Kate and Sawyer in cages which were formally the home to some polar bears which were part of DHARAMA's research, they were put to work building a road. Jack, a doctor before the crash, was kept in an underwater base where he was asked perform surgery on Ben who had a tumor.

Jack eventually fixed Ben, in exchange Kate and Sawyer were allowed to return to the main island and Jack went to live in Ben's village for a bit until a bunch of people working for Charles Widmore showed up on the island. Widmore grow up on the island and was originally the leader of the natives until Ben had him exiled after the death of the DHARAMA people - Widmore wanted to destroy the island.

Widmore's people shook things up and put Jack and Ben against each other, Jack welcomed the freighter as he hoped it would rescue the survivors, Ben wanted it destroyed as he knew it was Widmore's attempt at taking the island.

With the freighter destroyed the survivors remained trapped on the island apart from Jack, Kate, Sayid, Sun, Hurley, Desmond and Claire's baby who managed to escape the island in the freighter's helicopter, they eventually made it back home but their life isn't complete.

Locke is seemingly starting to replace Ben as the leader of "the others" and Jacob tells him he has to move the island, Ben know how so they head to another of DHARAMA's old station where Ben turns a huge wheel, the island vanishes as does Ben who awakens to find himself in a desert and Locke officially takes on the role of the leader of "the others".

After the island has been moved it starts to experience strange time issues and the survivors left behind jump through different time periods in the island's history. Jacob tells Locke that it should have been him who moved the island, not Ben. So Locke finds the same wheel and turns it and like Ben, awakens in a desert.

The island's inhabitants stop jumping through time but end up in 1977, the 815 survivors and some of Widmore's people who were left behind manage to get recruited in the the DHARAMA Initiative. In 1977 DHARMA are building The Swan, which was responsible for their planes crash. One of Widmore's men, Daniel comes up with a plan to destroy The Swan, thus preventing the crash from ever happening which would mean that Oceanic flight 815 landed safely and none of this nasty stuff ever happened.

Back in LA in present day, Locke and Ben were traveling around trying to convince Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sun to return. The island is constantly moving so they visit Daniel's mother who takes them to the Lamp Post which shows then where the island is. Three years after leaving the island, they all board a flight knowing that it will encounter difficulties and crash on the island, the pilot however manages to safely land the Ajira plane. Desmond doesn't return as he is now married with a child, Ben kills Locke before he boards the plane.

They manage to return to the island, some of them in the present day and some 1977 where they bump in to their friends who are in DHARMA. They help Daniel with his plan to detonate the nuke. This plan seemingly works as time re-sets to the present day.

The Man in Black knowing that Locke is dead, takes his form and on Ben's return to the island convinces him to kill Jacob as he can't do it himself. Luckily Hurley can see dead people so Jacob is still able to communicate with him.

Jacob tells Hurley to take Jack to a lighthouse where he sees the survivors name's written on a huge lense which is presumably part of the mechanic which Jacob used to monitor their survivors progress on their journey through life towards the island. Mean while the Man In Black take Sawyer to a cave where Jacob had written all of the survivors names on the wall, he tells Sawyer that all the names on the wall are candidates as to replace Jacob.

Jacob shows himself to some of the remaining survivors and tells them that now he is dead, one of them will need to replace him and protect the magical cave. Jack accepts the role and is signed in, he will now live forever like Jacob and the Man in Black who still looks like Locke.

Charles Windmore has managed to return to the island in a submarine, he has brought Desmond with him. Because he survived the event destruction of The Swan, Widmore knows that Desmond will be the key to destroying the island.

Locke rescues Desomond from Widmore, Jack takes Locke and Desmond to a magical cave. Jack thinks that Jacob brought Desmond back to the island because of his unique ability to survive electro-magnetic phenomenon and therefore thinks he is the key to saving the island. Locke thinks that Desmond is the weapon which will destroy the island. They lower him in to the magical glowing cave, each believing it is the right course of action.

In the cave, Desmond steps in to a pool of water which seems to be causing him pain due to some kind of electro-magnetic force, of course he is able to carry on and pulls out a huge stone plug in the middle of the pool. The water flows in to the hole and extinguishes the caves glow thus killing the island - Locke was right.

However in killing the island, it seems that their gift of eternal life has ended and they can hurt one another, they have a fight and Kate appears and shoots Locke just before he manages to kill Jack.

Kate and the other survivors then head for the Ajira plane as the island starts to crumble around them, Hurley and Ben stay with Jack. The plane just manages to clear the island before the runway collapses, we assume they make it home safe.

Meanwhile Jack passes the protector's role on to Hurley as he knows he must give his life to save the island, he climbs down in to the magical cave and puts the plug back in place, this fixes the island and all is fine. Hurley takes on the role of leader of "the others" and protector of the island, Ben becomes his "number two". As he expected to, Jack dies as a result of the restored electro-magnetism in the cave.

Of course there's also the back-plot, told in flashbacks which tells the story of how the survivors lives collided before the crash as a result of coincidence or fate, but there's far too much of that to mention.

The final season does away with the idea of flashbacks and instead shows us a glimpse of the afterlife, a timeless place the survivors have created. When they eventually all inevitably die one by one, they all meet up in this special place where all the survivors and their loved ones can be happy together.
