At the start of 2024, we once again invited our readers to gaze into the mystic mists of the unknown and share their visions for the year ahead. It's time to reveal how accurate they were.

We encouraged predictions of all kinds, whether they concerned world politics, weather anomalies, advancements in technology, or personal hunches about upcoming celebrity dramas. Although there's still a month for some of these to come true, we've compiled some of the most intriguing submissions.

One of our most prolific contributors, identifying themselves only as "Joe," sent a prediction of a "global communication blackout in late summer, triggered by solar flares." Joe claims this will lead to "temporary chaos, with governments scrambling to maintain order," but reassures us that "everything will return to normal within days." While solar flares didn't knock out any communications, they were responsible for some pretty impressive ribbons of light in the skies above Britain in May.

Another contributor, calling herself "Esme," offered a vivid vision of "a new virus emerging from Southeast Asia." Esme predicts this pathogen will "unite the world in a frenzy of precautionary measures, though the virus itself will turn out to be far less dangerous than initially feared." Thankfully, this one did not come true.

A more lighthearted prediction came from "Tom," who claims that "a major celebrity will accidentally release an embarrassing AI-generated song." Tom's vision includes "widespread mockery followed by a trend of ironic AI music releases that will dominate TikTok." Given the rapid rise of AI-generated content, this one doesn't feel too far-fetched - in fact, are we even sure this hasn't happened?

One particularly wild prediction came from a "seer" named Chris, who boldly claimed that "an enormous meteor will skim Earth's atmosphere in October, lighting up the night sky like day." Chris also warns us of "an increased interest in asteroid mining as a result." While large meteors have indeed created awe-inspiring events in the past, no such event occurred in October 2024.

Another intriguing entry came from "SJR," who foresees "unrest in the Royal Family." SJR predicts that "tensions between Prince William and Prince Andrew will surface publicly, leading to a rare and awkward official statement from Buckingham Palace." Given Prince Andrew's controversial history and Prince William's increasing prominence in royal duties, this kind of speculation isn't entirely surprising, though no such drama actually unfolded in 2024.

On the climate front, one contributor foresees "a summer of extreme weather in Europe," with heatwaves causing "increased migration." While summer 2024 was the warmest on record for Europe, and many parts saw substantial heatwaves, there was no evidence of mass migration directly linked to these temperature hikes.

A final and rather ominous prediction came from someone calling themselves "S." They wrote, cryptically, "A leader will fall in 2024." While no world leader met an untimely end this year, there were two high-profile assassination attempts on Donald Trump. Although these did not succeed, this makes this prediction one of the closest we received this year.

There were no matching or corroborating predictions sent in, but it's clear that many of the predictions reflect the anxieties, hopes, and general mood of the year. With just a month left in the year, it seems safe to say that few of the predictions bore any resemblance to real events, most seem unlikely to come true in the final days of 2024.

Thanks to everyone who sent in a prediction. We’ll be inviting you to share your visions for 2025 soon, so keep your crystal balls polished and your tarot cards at the ready.
