A new survey has revealed that younger people and those without higher education qualifications are the most likely to believe that the United States government is hiding the truth about UFOs.
The nationwide poll, carried out in April 2025 by NewsNation and Decision Desk HQ, found that 44% of Americans think the government is concealing information about unidentified flying objects. While this headline figure is notable on its own, it's the breakdown of beliefs among different demographics that paints the most interesting picture.
The survey shows that younger Americans are significantly more likely to believe in a UFO cover-up. Almost half of those aged under 30, known in the US as "Gen Z", said they believed the government was hiding something. The figure was similarly high among "millennials" - those in their late 20s to early 40s - with 48% expressing belief in a cover-up. In contrast, only 34% of baby boomers - those born between 1946 and 1964 - said the same.

Belief in UFO secrecy is also higher among people from ethnic minority backgrounds, with 52% of Black respondents and 49% of Hispanic respondents saying they think the government is hiding the truth. Among white respondents, belief was lower, at 41%.
Education appears to play a role as well. Among those whose highest qualification is equivalent to GCSEs or A-levels, 52% believe in government secrecy about UFOs. Among those who attended or graduated from university, belief was significantly lower, at 36%.
Overall, the poll found that 44% of Americans believe the US government is concealing information about UFOs, while 28% disagree. The remaining 28% said they weren't sure, suggesting many people are open to the idea but undecided.

The survey also highlighted political and regional differences. In the US, voters are broadly split between the Republican and Democratic parties. Among those who identified as Republicans, 48% believed in a cover-up, compared to 39% of Democrats. Voters who don't strongly identify with either party - known as "independents" - were close to the national average at 44%.
There were also differences based on where people live. Americans living in urban areas were more likely to believe in government UFO secrecy (47%) compared to those in rural areas (41%). Regionally, belief was highest in the Southern states (48%) and lowest in the Midwest (37%).
The survey was conducted online by TrueDot.ai from April 23 to 27, 2025, using a sample of 1,448 registered voters. In the US, registered voters are those who have officially signed up to vote in elections. The poll was weighted to ensure it reflected the population in terms of age, gender, race, education level, and location. The margin of error was ±2.4%.
